Caregivers are heroes in their own right and day in and day out care for the elderly; this could be a profession of choice by the caregiver or a labor of love for a family member.
Dedicating time as a caregiver isn’t an easy tasks and even well-meaning friends, family members or colleagues can sometimes say the wrong thing to a caregiver. Here is a list of statements you should never say to a caregiver:
1. “Let me know if you need anything.” A caregiver will never let you know; instead listen, spend time and observe what the caregiver in your life might need. What can actually reduce stress is providing something the caregiver uses routinely.
3. “Why don’t you do it this way?” Try to understand the caregiver and their actions instead of judging. Offer help with any struggles the caregiver may have instead.
4. “I don’t know how you do it.” Caregivers will give until they can’t give any more and it’s best not to add any pressure, even if you feel you aren’t. Instead ask questions about the caregiver’s daily routine and get a peek of what daily life is life and offer support.
